The updated HP ZBook 15 is the third generation of the world’s top-selling mobile workstation. This 15.6-inch premium mobile workstation was completely redesigned and is 27 percent thinner and 7 percent lighter than the previous generation. Boasting a 27 percent increase in battery life over the G2 ZBook 15, the new HP ZBook 15 is equipped with an Intel Core or Xeon processor, 64 GB ECC memory, dual 1 TB HP Z Turbo Drives G2 and SATA drive for up to 3 TB of total storage, dual Thunderbolt 3 ports, and optional HP DreamColor UHD or FHD touch displays.

NASA selected the HP ZBook 15 (Gen 2) mobile workstation as the next generation of laptops that will be deployed on the International Space Station in March of 2016 replacing the HP EliteBook 8570w mobile workstations that are currently in use aboard the ISS.
Back on Earth, the new HP ZBook 17 features an impressive 67 percent increase in battery life compared to the previous generation 17.3-inch workstation but is now also 25 percent thinner and 11 percent lighter than its predecessor. You can configure this mobile workstation with an Intel Core or Xeon processor, up to 64 GB ECC memory, dual 1 TB HP Z Turbo Drives G2 and SATA drives for up to 4 TB of total storage, dual Thunderbolt 3, and optional HP DreamColor UHD or FHD touch displays. The ZBook 17 is also available with up to Nvidia Quadro M5000M with an 8 GB frame buffer.
All of the third-generation ZBooks still deliver the durability of Mil-spec (Mil-Std 810G2) certification and feature BIOS and Firmware protection with HP Sure Start to prevent corruption of the BIOS or firmware during updates. These mobile workstations also include HP Remote Graphics Software 7.1 + HP Velocity, which is HP’s remote access and collaboration software for 3D rendering and CAD applications, that is up to 60% faster and provides up to 7x faster network file transfers than the previous generation of RGS.
If mobility is one of your primary concerns then you’ll be happy to know the new ZBooks also feature a new 150W power adapter that is 37% smaller and 50% lighter with thinner cables that are easier to wrap and store in your bag.
For those users who are looking for a desktop-replacement solution, all Gen3 ZBooks now feature Thunderbolt 3 and are compatible with the new HP ZBook Dock with Thunderbolt 3. Users can link up to 10 devices at once through the ports on the ZBook Dock that include Thunderbolt 3 (supporting DisplayPort 1.2, USB 3.1 Gen 2, and PCIe), four USB 3.0, RJ-45, VGA, combo audio, and two additional DisplayPorts.
The HP ZBook Studio is currently scheduled to begin shipping in December starting at $1699. The more affordable HP ZBook 15u will be available in January of 2016 starting at just $1099. HP didn’t provide a starting price for either the ZBook 15 or ZBook 17 but both mobile workstations should also begin shipping in January. The new HP ZBook Dock with Thunderbolt 3 will be available in December with a retail price of $229.
